Day of the Dead Pet: One Photo, and They Come Back
On October 27 the Día de Muertos ofrenda is for the animals, and the tradition says they come back first. The 2026 Day of the Dead pet video is one photo long: your pet steps out of a doorway of marigolds, crosses the petals to your bed, checks in at the customs desk of the dead, or turns to light. Pick one of the clips below, upload a photo, and AI plays it with your animal as the one coming home.

Day of the Dead Pet Videos to Remix
Ten Day of the Dead pet clips to pick from: the dalmatian that comes back to the bed, the Great Dane trotting up a road of candles, the customs hall where a skeleton officer checks the pet’s photo and waves it through, the yorkie that runs into a woman’s arms. Pick the one whose scene fits your photo, and that clip becomes the reference for your video, sound included.

October 27 belongs to the animals. In Mexico the Día de Muertos week starts with them: before the ofrendas go up for family on November 1 and 2, the night of the 27th is when pets are said to come back first, and a small altar goes out for them.
That altar is a photo, a bowl of water, their kibble or their favourite treat, a toy, a blanket, marigold petals laid as a path to the door and a candle to light it. The tradition’s name in Spanish is Día de Muertos de las Mascotas, and the older, non-Mexican cousin of the idea is the rainbow bridge: the pet waiting somewhere else until you arrive. The Day of the Dead pet story is the other direction. They visit.
For a few years a Day of the Dead pet tribute meant a photo on an altar. Since late September 2026 it has meant a video instead. The whole thing starts with one photo of a pet that has died: an image-to-video model walks it back into the world, and the CapCut templates the tutorials hand out fix the rest — the doorway drawn in marigold petals, the bed you are asleep in, the candles along the road, the dissolve into golden light at the end. The other half of the Day of the Dead pet trend is built like a film: a Coco-styled customs hall in the land of the dead, with skeleton officers in uniform, a framed ofrenda photo of your pet in a neon frame, a check of the paperwork and a wave through the gate. The two shapes are the same joke told two ways, one about the visit and one about the border.
The clip that carried the shape is the bedroom one: the pet pushes out of a doorway of light, crosses the petals to the bed and curls up with whoever is asleep. From there people branched out — a Great Dane trotting down a candle-lit road, a chihuahua with its face painted like a sugar skull, a yorkie running into a woman’s arms hard enough to knock her back, the pet sitting in the marigolds while the light goes out of it. Search the phrase and you also get the decorations half of it, glass and resin figurines and little altars for sale; that is a different page. This one is the video.
None of it is footage. A video model reads the photo, invents the walk, the look into the lens and the meeting, and keeps the fur and the markings from your picture; the marigolds and the city are generated around it. That is also why it works for a pet whose only good photo is the one on the shelf, and why every clip looks a little like a dream. Treat it as a tribute you made, not as something you witnessed — it is worth saying so in the caption, especially if you are sending it to family who are still grieving.
How to Make a Day of the Dead Pet Video
- 1
Pick the clip that fits your photo
A dark bedroom, a customs hall, a road of candles, a hug on the marigold ground. The clip supplies the scene, the camera, the timing and the sound; your photo supplies the animal. If your pet’s photo is a close-up on a sofa, take the bedroom or the hug; a full-body photo in profile reads best on the road.
- 2
Upload the photo of your pet
One clear photo, whole animal in frame if you have it, face visible, eyes open, collar and markings showing. If the clip has a person in it, add their photo as Image 2 so the model keeps their face; for two pets, Image 2 is the second one. The prompt already says who is who.
- 3
Make it and post it
Your Day of the Dead pet video comes back vertical, at the clip’s own length, with the sound still on it and no watermark, ready for TikTok under #diademuertosmascotas or #dayofthedeadpets, or for Reels and Shorts. On the 27th it lands with the rest of them.
Tips for a Better Day of the Dead Pet Video
One clear photo of the whole animal
A photo cropped at the neck gives the model nowhere to put the paws, and the walk turns into a floating head. A full-body shot, or at least chest-up with room around the legs, keeps the arrival readable. Face toward the camera and eyes open if the photo has it.
Say what to keep, not what to fix
The prompt should name the things you care about: breed, size, fur colour, the patch over one eye, the collar. Add them to the box in plain words. Asking it to look more like the photo usually just flattens the lighting of the scene.
Match the clip to the animal
A big dog reads well on the candle-lit road, a small one on the bed or in the customs hall, a cat at the desk where it can sit up and be inspected. Picking the clip that already has your animal’s size in it saves a whole render.
Two pets or a person? Image 2
The clips with a person in them want a photo of that person as Image 2, and the two-pet clips want the second animal there. One photo still works: the animal is replaced and everything else in the clip stays exactly as it is.
The 27th is the date, not a deadline
The ofrenda night is October 27, but nothing about a Day of the Dead pet video expires with it. People post these through the first week of November and again for the anniversary of a loss, and the clips still make sense in January.
Say that it is AI
A Day of the Dead pet video is a made thing, and the people you send it to deserve to know that. TikTok, Instagram and YouTube all have an AI label; use it, and keep the caption about the pet rather than about the tool.
Pricing
Each Day of the Dead pet video is one use (700 credits), whether you pick any length from 10 to 15 seconds. The price is on the button before you start, and nothing else is added.
A single use is $9.90; packs of 4 and 8 uses, or a monthly plan that posts trend videos to your accounts for you, cost less per video. A render that fails is refunded automatically.
Autopilot plans
Every month we turn the newest trends into meme videos and post them to your accounts. Each post is one of the plan’s videos, and any you make yourself come out of the same count. Cancel any time.
One-time video packs
Pay once and use them on any trend template, at any length. The credits never expire, and the other video tools can spend them too.
Use it responsibly
- Only upload photos of yourself, of people who said yes, or of your own pets.
- Do not use it to make someone look like they did something they did not.
- Label the result as AI when you post it; TikTok and Instagram both have an AI-generated tag.
- Only use a photo of a pet that was yours, or one whose owner has said yes; a memorial video is not something to make about someone else’s loss unasked.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Day of the Dead pet tradition?
In Mexico the Día de Muertos week opens with the animals: October 27 is the night the pets are said to come back, before the family ofrendas on November 1 and 2. A small altar goes up with their photo, marigold petals, candles, water, their bowl and a toy, and the petals are laid as a path from the door so they can find their way.
When is the Day of the Dead for pets in 2026?
October 27. It is the first of the eight nights and the one given to the animals, so the pet ofrenda goes out on the evening of the 26th or during the day of the 27th, and the family altars follow at the end of the week. In Spanish the day is called Día de Muertos de las Mascotas or Día de los Muertos para Mascotas.
What are the Day of the Dead animals called?
Two different things. Alebrijes are the brightly painted folk-art creatures — part dog, part bird, part everything — that stand for spirit animals in the tradition, and people now make them out of their own pets. The xoloitzcuintli, the Mexican hairless dog, is the animal said to guide a soul across the river to the land of the dead, which is why it shows up in every telling of this night.
What do you put on an ofrenda for a pet?
A photo, marigolds and loose cempasúchil petals, candles, a glass of water, their food bowl with a little kibble or their favourite treat, a toy, a blanket, and a path of petals from the door to the altar. Some people add a sugar skull with the pet’s name or a painted alebrije of it. It is meant to be something they would recognise.
Is the Day of the Dead pet video real footage?
No. A video model reads the photo you upload and generates the walk, the look into the lens and the meeting; the marigolds, the candles and the city of the dead are generated around it. Nothing is filmed and nobody was there. That is what makes it work with a single old photo, and it is the reason to label it as AI when you post it.
Is this the same as the rainbow bridge?
No, though they are cousins. The rainbow bridge is the western idea of a pet waiting somewhere else until you get there; the Day of the Dead pet night is the belief that they come back for one visit, first of the whole week, and you leave the door and the petals open. The AI clips borrow from both: the bridge of light in some of them, the doorway and the bed in others.
What is the Amor Verdadero template?
It is one of the CapCut templates the trend travels on, and the name is the only thing in Spanish most people see: it is the version where your pet walks across the marigold ground and you kneel and hug it. The other big one is the Coco customs-hall template. Both do in an editing app what this page does here with the clip you pick as the reference.
Can I make one for a pet that is still alive?
Yes, and plenty of people do. It reads as a keepsake rather than a visit — the same animal, in the marigold light, looking back at you. The clips do not require the pet to have died; they only need one clear photo of it.
Does it work for a cat, a horse, a bird?
Any animal photo works, because the model swaps the animal in the clip rather than requiring a match. Cats are the strongest of the lot: the white cat at the customs desk is on this page, and the desk scene suits a cat that can sit up and be inspected. Horses and birds come out best on the road and the doorway clips, where the animal is seen at a distance.
What is the sound in these videos?
Each Day of the Dead pet clip keeps its own audio, and a remix keeps it too, so you do not need to add anything. The real ofrenda posts on TikTok mostly run on “Remember Me” — “Recuérdame” in the Spanish dub — from the film Coco, which is what most people now hear in their head when they think of this night; the generated clips tend to carry a soft instrumental instead.
Is the Day of the Dead pet video free?
One video is one use, 700 credits, at any length from 10 to 15 seconds. A single use is $9.90, and packs of 4 and 8 cost less per video. Failed renders are refunded. A render that fails is refunded, and the price is on the button before you start.
What is the Day of the Dead Pet AI prompt?
The home, on the bed prompt is in the AI Prompts section below. It starts: "Image 1 is the pet." Paste the rest into any AI video tool that accepts your photos.

The prompts behind each shape: the pet coming home to the bed, the customs desk in the land of the dead, the hug on the marigold ground, the walk up the petal road, and two pets coming back together. Each one spells out the scene, what the animal does and what to keep from the photo, so you can change the room, the light or the meeting and keep the rest.
Home, on the bed
Image 1 is the pet. Image 2, when there is one, is the person the pet comes back to, or the second pet. A dark bedroom at night; on the far wall a doorway is drawn in glowing marigold petals and candles, and a trail of petals runs from it across the floor. The pet steps out of that doorway, crosses the room, puts its front paws on a low bed and settles against the person asleep there, who shifts and puts an arm around it without waking. Keep the species, breed, size, fur colour, markings and eye colour of the pet from Image 1 exactly as in the photo, and the face, hair, skin tone, build and clothes of any person from Image 2. Vertical phone footage, candlelight against blue night. Audio: a soft acoustic lullaby, no dialogue.
